I Won An Award For My Blog!

Today I was planning to write a post about some of my favorite store bought snack foods that both the adults and the kids will like, but this morning I received an email informing me that I was chosen to receive the Ekone Creative Services 2014 Youth in Media Award. Ekone Creative Services 2014 Youth In Media Award Winner Merissa Hatch TabletIt is a local award given to a young adult or teenager by a radio channel. I received the award for “creativity and self-directed productivity in print, audio and visual media during 2014.” I am so excited and honored to receive this award, so everyone who was involved in the decision process, thank you so much!

KVGD is a local radio station that is just getting started. When I found out they sponsor a monthly open mic, I decided to try it out,. I went for the first time in April and read a short story about Jake Crayly from my last book “Kindergarten Mishaps:The Magic Teacher.” From there I got to learn more about what they do and their goals and that is how they heard about what I have been doing.

The funny thing is that I was given the tablet for winning about a week ago. But, at the time, I did not know why. Then, this morning I got an email explaining about the award, and how I was in the running for it and won! I feel so blessed to have such a huge amount of supporters. I have about 10 Twitter followers, over two dozen followers on Facebook, a growing email list (a confidential one that will NEVER be sold, rented or given out), a bunch of family and an overwhelming amount of people locally all rooting for me. Many of whom have been around since I informed them I wanted to be a writer when I grew up at 7 years old.Ekone Creative Services 2014 Youth In Media Award Winner Merissa Hatch

I CAN’T BELIEVE i WON AN AWARD! Thank you all so much. Without those who read my blog, watch my videos on  YouTube, tweet me and follow me everywhere else, I probably would have quit a LONG time ago!

I do several things online and I have not added all my links to things on my website before, so below are the links to my YouTube Channel, Twitter, Facebook and other things about me online. Again, thank you KVGD, friends and family. I couldn’t have won anything without you!

I am thinking about getting a snapchat and an instagram, so let me know in the comments below if you think I should.

Also, post in the comments the name of an award or honor you would like to win someday and why. I can’t wait to see all you answers.  🙂

Merissa Writes Goals, Change and Branding

Over the past several months, I have been working very hard on creating a blog which is a platform for me to write, and also a place for parents and caregivers to find great ideas to keep their kids active and creative. I have not written for about a month because first I got strep throat, then I badly sprained my ankle and two days later I got sick with bronchitis. All of these things have happened since Thanksgiving day. Needless to say, I was starting to feel pretty down. But even though many of you have not heard from me for a long time, I have been using the past month to think about how I want to structure my business of writing, who my audience is, what I want to do and why. This week, I have been researching and learning a lot about both myself, and how to run my business.

First things first: WHAT DO I WANT TO DO?

I want to create a website that brings parents and kids together to enhance their bond, encourage kids to get off the television and video games and encourage parents to have a blast while their kids are young.

HOW AM GOING TO DO IT?

I will be actively involved with children and parents. I plan to babysit and nanny to get opportunity to be inspired to write my books for children, but also to learn some of the struggles involved with actively playing with kids. (How can I write about something I have not experienced and give you my best ideas)?

I have noticed a lot of people blog about their day care so that they will gain more clients. I intend to do the opposite (I guess I am just an opposite kind of person). My main business will be my blog and children’s stories.

WHAT IS MY BRANDING?

A few months ago, I interviewed for a content writing job for a photography company. One thing that I was told was how important branding is to any business. That conversation got me thinking a lot about the things I want people to say when they see something I create.

I have a lot of interests and hobbies that I love to teach to children and families. My number one priority is that I stay unique in whatever I do. Imagine a patchwork quilt with all different colors, shapes and sizes; that is the sort of brand that I want. I am in the process of learning about branding because when you read something I write, or see something I draw, I want you to think ” Well, she’s just all over the place.”

I have not figured out exactly how everything will work, but I know that takes a lot of trial and error. Understanding my own brand is still a work in progress, keeping on a posting schedule, researching keywords and building an audience are all things I will keep working on and learning about till I am done, which is never. But I hope this clears up my goals for all of you awesome fans who care about me and what I am doing. Thanks, everyone!

The NaMos are Coming! The NaMos are Coming!

Which one of these challenges will Merissa be taking? Check back to https://merissawrites.wordpress.com for the ‘big reveal” tomorrow! I’d say that this article gives a great general description of both of the challenges, and how to do them. Thank you!

The WordPress.com Blog

November is one week away, and that means NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo are, too!

If you’ve been thinking about reinvigorating your blogging or are finally ready to stop procrastinating on that book you’ve always wanted to write, these two great events (and communities) can give you the jolt of motivation you need.

NaMo what now?

NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo are short for “National Novel Writing Month” and “National Blog Posting Month,” respectively. In the first, writers commit to writing a 50,000-word novel between November 1 and November 30; in the second, to posting every single day in November.

310,095 participants started the month of November as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.

NaNoWriMo 2013 at a Glance

Although the two events are separate, they share a history: NaBloPoMo started in response to NaNoWriMo, when a group of bloggers who lacked the time or inclination to write…

Trying NaBloPoMo!!!

If you have loved writing as long as I have you probably have heard of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). It is an even which happens to be in November where millions of writers challenge themselves to write the first draft of a 50,000+ word novel by the end of the month.

For years I have been wanting to particiate, but never seem to remember until it is well into the month. This year I was planning to participate, but unfortunately, I will not have the time. But about a week ago I was reading a blog about another challenge for writers, in the month of November, called NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month). While I do not have time to write a 50,000 word novel this month, I have discovered that I do have time for this.

The goal of NaBloPoMo is to write at least one post per day for the entire month of November. I realize it is the fifth of November, but now that I have finally cleared a chunk of my day, I will begin updating my blog daily for the rest of the month (except Saturdays and some Sundays) after which, I will likely resume to posting every Monday and Thursday.

I am going to be totally honest and say that I am really nervous about this because for me it is a huge commitment. I tend to start projects and then not finish them. But I keep thinking of me as high school student, struggling in my classes and about to give up. But my mom would just tell me that if I gave up in school, i would be giving myself the right to give up on anything throughout my life. So while I am very nervous that I will not be able to do it, I know that it is going to feel great acoomplishing this goal.
I am saying this for two reasons: the first is to ensure that I can’t make excuses, and the second is to encourage other people who write to make the same goal. If I, being one who procrastinates a lot, can do it, so can you, especially with a support system! Let’s be each other’s support system. If you are going to take the NaBloPoMo or the NaNoWriMo challenge, post a comment and a link to your blog. It may be the fifth, but it is never too late to challenge yourself to be better.

UPDATE 10-30-14

You may have seen at the bottom of this page my anouncement that my free ebook “Lily C. Pancakes” would be available October 19th. You may also have noticed that I have been writing a lot more posts about things you can do with kids. Below is an update about how I am doing, and what I have been up to.

Free ebook
Several weeks ago, I went to Kindle to upload my free ebook, but I found that they do not allow free ebooks on Kindle for small press or self- publishing. I will be using a different company to publish. Unfortunately, the new company I will be using takes several weeks to create and format. That is why “Lily C. Pancakes” has not been released, yet. As soon as I know the release date, I will be posting again. Keep your eye open!

Babysitting
I started to look for a full time babysitting/nanny job about a month ago. I had only been looking for about three days when I was blessed with one. I changed the look and design of my website recently from being all about freelance writing and grammar to being about what I really love, which is kids. Babysitting nine hours a day gives a lot of time to take pictures of the things we do, but it does not give very much time for me to actually blog about it. But to me it’s worth it, because I am combining the two things I love most, writing and kids.

Contact me
I realize that I have not updated my “About Me” page,  or my “Contact” page. I wrote it quiet a long time ago, but did not realize that it the updates have not been published. I will do so as soon as I can.

Just as a quick reference, you can like me on facebook at http://facebook.com/merissawrites or you can email me at merissawrites@gmail.com Continue reading
